Logging and monitoring web activity with Domino (continued)

FIGURE A

The Domino server must be shut down and restarted for any changes to the logging settings to take effect. If logging to a database is enabled; the database will be created when the server is restarted. All user interaction with your web server will be logged in the specified text file or database.

Logging activity to a Notes database uses more resources than text files. Both text file and database logging can be enabled at the same time, but only choose one to reduce the load on the server.

Viewing logs
Once logging has been enabled, activity can be viewed depending on your settings. If the option to log to text files was chosen, open the text file with your favorite editor to view activity, as shown in Figure B. The name and path of the text file or files depend on the configuration settings in the server document.

On the other hand, if logging to a database was chosen it can be viewed using your Notes client or favorite browser, as shown in Figure C.

For fun reading, examine the raw server log in a Notes database. Roll over picture for a larger image.

Looking at the raw log entries can be a wasteful exercise, and it gives you no idea of the overall usage of your site. Third party products such as WebTrends (see http://www.webtrends.com/) allow analysis of text-based log files. Dominator (see http://www.BaseLineInc.com/) produces reports within the Domino environment using the Domino log database.

Conclusion
Domino is no different than other web server when tracking and monitoring web access. You can quickly find out who and what they are doing after proper configuration. Next month, we will dive into the details of log entries.
