How I learned to stop worrying and love the SMTP MTA (continued)

SMTPMTA_IPPORT
A final parameter worth mentioning is PORT. This was released with Domino Release 4.6.1 and MTA version 1.2. The SMTPMTA_IPPORT parameter allows you to change the port number SMTP listens to for inbound mail (SMTP typically listens to port 25). Usage is as follows:

SMTPMTA_IPPORT=26 (where 26 is the port number SMTP listens)

This parameter may be used in conjunction with anti-virus and security products such as MimeSweeper and Worldtalk's WorldSecure Server so that these products can co-exist on the same server with the SMTP MTA.

For example, let's say that we install WorldSecure Server on the same server as the Domino server running SMTP MTA. Both WorldSecure Server's SMTP and the SMTP MTA, left unconfigured, would attempt to listen at port 25, thus creating a conflict.

Setting the SMTP MTA's port to 26 would allow WorldSecure Server to listen on port 25, then forward any mail that made it past the security policies and virus scanning to port 26 and into the SMTP MTA and therefore into the Domino mail system.

Final Notes On Implementation of NOTES.INI Changes
Making changes to the NOTES.INI file that affect the SMTP MTA will require that you restart the SMTP MTA. To do this, enter the following commands on your SMTP MTA server.

tell SMTPMTA quit

Wait for the SMTP MTA to echo on the server that it has stopped.

Load SMTPMTA

DO NOT simply make a change to your NOTES.INI and walk away from your server. Schedule the changes, and do adequate testing before allowing the changes to affect your production environment.

Security beyond SMTP MTA
If your Domino users are coming into your site using POP mail, or you dislike the idea of placing your Domino server running SMTP MTA directly on the Internet, there are several SMTP servers that may be used in place of the SMTP MTA. Two of these, MimeSweeper and WorldSecure Server, we've already mentioned.

There are countless alternatives available, many of them very inexpensive and in some cases free. Alas, there are too many to review within this article. In a follow-up article we will examine the capabilities of some of these alternatives, including Mimesweeper and WorldSecure Server. We will also discuss implementation of these relays in different situations.

Conclusion
Spam is more than a nuisance and it should NOT be ignored. Spam consumes bandwidth, storage space, and clogs up mail systems.

A huge problem in the war against spam is that there is little incentive for spammers to alter their behavior. For a relatively low cost, they can contact several million people, meaning that they will have paid for their expenses if only a few people take them up on their offers.

Some US government regulation has been passed and more is on the way, but its doubtful about what affect it will have on the overall problem. For more information on the legal aspect of spam, see the August DominoPower article entitled "Email spam vs. the First Amendment". However, US law doesn't cover sites outside the United States. Its more likely that we'll see more legal spam, while at the same time persistent spammers will simply use non-US sites to send messages.
