Log analysis programs compared (continued)

The installation procedure was clean and smooth as well. The final install consists of three databases: the core product, additional design elements, and help. It seems like the application could easily be converted to one database. The help database is small, but the information is excellent. The final part of setup involves copying design elements from the additional design database to your Domino Web server log database. These include two views and two agents. Because I had to modify my previously sacrosanct server log database, this step made me very nervous.

The Domino Web server log database (usually DOMLOG.NSF) receives its design from a template, so the design changes you make may be overwritten if you forget to turn off this feature. Also, the copying of design elements has to be a daunting task for non-developers. I have extensive development experience and, I was a bit confused.

Basically, the Domino Log Analyzer application reconfigures your Domino Web server log database to include extra views and handles the purging of documents from the database. This helps with housekeeping chores, and it allows certain websites and/or MIME types to be filtered. This seems like a duplication of effort since filtering can be accomplished in the Server document. A purge interval can be set on the database as well. Figure E shows how a reconfigured view may look in your Domino Web server log database.

WorkFlo's Domino Log Analyzer allows the creation of a comma-delimited text file for use with an external application like Microsoft Excel. This is a nice feature given the fact that spreadsheet applications are much better with analysis jobs, but it forces you to leave the familiar Domino/Notes environment.
