Log analysis programs compared (continued)
Conclusion These three products do not represent every available Domino log analysis tool, but now you have a good start. The products stack up as follows:
| Product |
Features |
Price |
| Dominator |
Native Domino application, one database, multiple clients, email reports, report generation within Notes. |
Shareware, v1.0 is $39.95, v2.0 is $89, unlimited Enterprise licenses |
| WebTrends |
Extremely powerful, very fast, supports text files only, graphing, ad tracing, link analysis |
v1.0 is $999, an upgrade is $699 |
| Domino Log Analyzer |
Native Domino application, export capability for use with spreadsheet, excellent documentation, excellent integrated solution |
V2.2 is $500.00 per server |
If you look at the price column, you can see a huge difference. At $89.00, the Dominator application is a bargain -- if you're willing to go with a shareware product. It keeps the reporting chores within the familiar Notes/Domino environment. Also, installing Dominator on your server and giving others access to it (like Marketing) allows the job of monitoring or report-generation to be shared, thus easing the burden on administrators. The installation and setup of the Domino Log Analyzer may be a challenge for novices and the price is somewhat high for what you get. But if you're willing to allow a piece of software into your log database, the Domino Log Analyzer makes for an excellent integrated solution. The WebTrends offering had an excellent look and feel, is incredibly powerful, but does require you to step outside of the Domino working environment and into a well-behaved Windows application. For an inexpensive, Domino-centric solution, we recommend Dominator. For a strong, professional, commercially supported solution for major Web sites, we recommend WebTrends.
