Don't go postal: how to fix your mail.box (continued)
Reload the router and SMTP
After updall has completed, any corruption in mail.box should be repaired. Mail routing should resume once the router and SMTP tasks are reloaded. Type the following commands on the Domino server console:
If mail routing doesn't resume, there are two options -- re-running the fixup, compact, and updall processes until mail routing resumes, or replacing the mail.box database. As stated previously, replacing the mail.box database is the last resort, so it's imperative that your best effort is applied to recovering the existing mail.box database.
Running commands while the server is down If you shut the Domino server down, you can still apply your commands from a command line. For example, on an NT server, open a command line prompt, and then change to the Domino executable directory. Type the command:
This will execute the compact command. Type "nupdall" and "nfixup" to run the updall and fixup commands, respectively.
The commands may also be executed in Unix and AS/400 environments. In Unix, change to the Domino data directory, then execute
/opt/lotus/bin/compact mail.box
|
On the AS/400, commands may be executed through the submit job (SBMJOB) command.
Replacement of mail.box If recovery of the mail.box database fails, replacement might be necessary. If so, you should followthe tasks below to replace the mail.box database.
"Remember, replacing your mail.box should only be a last resort to problem resolution for severe corruption, as you have a chance of losing any mail that is currently in the existing mail.box database."
|
Mail.box cannot be replaced if the server is active. Shut down the Domino server to rename mail.box.
Once these commands have ended, rename the mail.box with a different file name. This may be done through "normal" file commands (i.e., Windows NT Explorer if your Domino server is running on NT or Unix rename command if you're running in a Unix environment). Don't move the newly renamed database from under the Domino data directory.
Restart the Domino server. Once it's started and the router task loads, Domino will recognize that the mail.box database is not present and automatically re-create the mail.box database from the mail router template on the server.
After the Domino server has fully loaded, mail routing should resume. At this point, you can open the renamed database on the Domino server by selecting Database->Open from the File menu and then entering the renamed filename into the filename field. Open the new mail.box database on the Domino server. It is now possible to cut and paste mail messages from the old mail.box database to the new database. This process should be done from newest to oldest. It is also best to only cut and paste a few messages at a time, then allow the router to process those messages before moving on to the next batch.
