Integrating Domino with Office 2000 via XML (continued)
Converting the old Excel 97 code From the above code it can be seen that the basic steps in converting code based on Excel 97 extended HTML tags are:
- Incorporate the new XHTML declaration in the <HTML> tag of the document.
- Convert attribute names where these have changed (e.g. from FORMULA to x:fmla).
- Optionally build in document attributes and formatting.
While these differences are minor, the major difference is the scope for what can now be created in a Domino agent. It's possible now to dynamically create almost any spreadsheet, including multiple worksheets and charts using the new tags and attributes added to the basic set included in Excel 97. Furthermore, these same techniques can be extended to create PowerPoint slideshows and Word documents. With the publication of DXL, the XML standard for Domino Data, it's possible to transfer information between Office and Domino without writing an interface. The XSL stylesheet formatting and transformation standard makes this possible, more of which I'll tell you about in another article!
Product availability and resources The essential reference is available from Microsoft in an HTML Help document, together with the DTDs for the various Office XML document types. This is available in an self-installing EXE from http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/officedev/ofxml2k/ofhtml9.exe.
The sample database for the 1998 article has been updated to include a new sample LotusScript servlet style agent to create XHTML documents for both Excel and Web browsers. This version of the agent has also been updated to use Lotus Connectors (part of the LEI/DECS suite) rather than the more old-fashioned LS:DO ODBC connection. It's available from http://www.rhizomatics.demon.co.uk/software/.
