DOMINOPOWER SITE OF THE MONTH
Extreme business applications
By Steve Niles

My boss at DominoPower magazine might be surprised to learn that I've got a new job. I've just been hired by the Extreme Cycling bicycle company and given an entry-level position in the Product Marketing department. There's a lot of room for advancement here. All I have to do is perform a few tasks using the company's new intranet and soon I'll be promoted to Human Resources.

How did a guy who can't even figure out how to shift gears on a ten-speed get hired at a company called Extreme Cycling? Well, it was easy. All I had to do was visit May's DominoPower Site of the Month at http://www2.entrevision.com/Izone/IzoneNav.nsf/ExtremeCycling.

Extreme Cycling is a fictional company, designed and developed for Lotus by EntreVision, Inc. using Domino 4.6. Its purpose is to allow visitors to experience the power of Lotus Domino for themselves.

When you visit the Extreme Cycling site, you will be invited to take a guided tour during which you will progress through the company ranks. You can see the positions you'll have a chance to fill in Figure A. As you climb the company's corporate ladder, you will be able to sample some of the amazing things you can do using Lotus Domino on the Web.

According to Lotus, this exercise is designed as a showcase so users can, "gain access to different departmental desktops, see how access to information changes according to their role, and participate in workflow applications as if they were real Extreme Cycling employees."

Some of the tasks you'll have a chance to try include offering ideas for a new product, adding items to the Knowledge Base, approving press releases, sending email, and scheduling group meetings.

Not only might you get some new ideas for yourself at Extreme Cycling, but it might be a valuable site to use to impress your potential clients. Also, while it's not quite on par with Myst, you may come to think of it as a diverting role-playing adventure. I probably got a little too involved, however, when I started conspiring against my fictional coworkers by belittling their opinions and calling for massive layoffs in order to get rid of the dead weight.
