DOMINOPOWER SITE OF THE MONTH
Domino helps teach Dutch students a thing or two
By Steve Niles

"Since the introduction of computers into education, there have been efforts to develop educational software that could replace the instructor." So begins a paper entitled "Strategic Requirements for a System to Generate and Support WWW-Based Environments for a Faculty" by Ger Tielemans and Betty Collis of the University of Twente, the Netherlands. Their paper goes on to describe the creation of TeleTOP, a course-design and delivery system built atop a Lotus Domino Web database. The finished product can be found at June's DominoPower site of the Month, http://teletop.edte.utwente.nl.

TeleTOP stands for the Tele-learning T.O. Project. In effect, it's a distance learning application designed for the students and faculty of the University of Twente. From their own Web browsers at home, teachers and students can hold and attend virtual classes. The professors can post assignments, and the students are able to complete and submit them entirely online.

In their paper, Tielemans and Collis describe some of the thinking behind TeleTop:

On the basis of a Web database that is optimized for free-format data (because we did not want to decide in advance what an instructor or student may want to include in a course environment) and that can support a large number of simultaneous users (a Domino server, 4.6), we have created an environment that from the instructor perspective is as simple as a great number of hierarchically ordered Web-based fill-in forms.

In the demo, pictured in Figure A, you can see an example of one of these fill-in forms.

Students can write their assignments into TeleTOP and submit them to their instructor online. Click picture for a larger image.

As always, it's incredibly interesting to see another application of Lotus Domino. Check out the University of Twente's TeleTOP Web site to see for yourself how Domino has been used to create an online learning environment.
