The coming of the Raven (continued)

Discovery Engine
The Discovery Engine is a search engine for the Knowledge Portal. Content is organized so that it is easily surfed and searched. It organizes the information on the fly. That is, it creates a catalog of data and expertise by scanning the content in order to deduce meaning. The results are then organized and presented to the user community.

The Discovery Engine allows resources (i.e., people) to be easily located. If a manager needs to find an individual with a particular skill or set of skills, she can easily use the Discovery Engine to unearth resources within the organization. This addresses a serious problem in many organizations where the skill sets of the work force are unknown.

Application Templates
Finally, the Application Templates facilitate the creation of customized knowledge management applications. The templates allow portals to be created for individual users and specialized communities such as the engineering department or human resources.

Why Domino?
Raven takes advantage of the dynamic, flexible nature of the Domino Application Server. The messaging, Web server, security, and search engine make Domino a perfect fit for a product such as Raven.

Availability
As of the writing of this article, the Raven product has not been released. A beta program has just been completed with both individuals and organizations working with it to ensure proper functionality. Many Lotus business partners are getting a jump on the technology, so they can properly present it to current and future companies.

Conclusion
The development of Raven has combined two hot concepts, knowledge management and portals. Given the difficulty many companies have in locating resources and information within their organization, Raven should be a big hit in the world of enterprise computing.
