Making the case for running Domino on Linux (continued)
Caldera OpenLinux
Caldera (at http://www.caldera.com), until recently, was primarily thought of as a home user distribution of Linux. Caldera has a very advanced graphic installer that makes it easy for you to get Linux running on your computer. This installer, called the "Lizard," is a great way for new users to get acquainted with the Linux operating system.
In an effort to attract more business users to their product, Caldera has released several new features that strive to better meet the needs of businesses.
SuSE Linux
SuSE (at http://www.suse.com) is the largest and most popular Linux distribution in Europe. Founded in 1992, SuSE is one of the oldest Linux companies in the world. The standard SuSE distribution includes more than 1,500 applications, which is more than any other Linux distribution.
Like Red Hat, SuSE is targeted toward the business market and has made several prominent partnerships with companies like AMD and Oracle.
Appliances One of the forces driving the success of Linux has been the server appliance market. A server appliance is usually a 1U or 2U rack-mounted computer that offers an easy to use interface designed to mask the complexities of Linux. These servers can usually be up and running in about 15 minutes and require very little hands-on maintenance to keep them running.
Two of the most popular appliances are the Cobalt RaQ Server (at http://www.cobalt.com) and the LinuxSolve vHost Servers (at http://www.linuxsolve.com). These servers provide robust, reliable email, file sharing, and Web hosting with very little user input. A third option is a product called NetMax (at http://www.netmax.com) which is a software-based solution that provides the same benefits as both the Cobalt and the LinuxSolve servers, but it installs over an existing version of Linux.
Linux is also going into real appliances, very cheap devices for use in the home. Because there's no per-unit royalty for Linux, it doesn't add to the cost of goods for these devices and because it's a robust operating system, gadget makers are able to get a lot of bang for no bucks.
History of Domino on Linux At LinuxWorld '99, Lotus released a preview version of Domino Server for Linux. It was an instant success. More than 4,700 copies of the preview release were downloaded in the first 24 hours.
After its gold announcement at Lotusphere Europe '99, version 5.02 of Lotus Domino for Linux was released in December of 1999. The release again proved Lotus' support for cross-platform solutions and also introduced the first mainstream business collaboration software for the Linux platform. Domino for Linux includes all the services and tools you've come to love. In fact, application level clustering is provided, and administrators are able to cluster Linux servers running Domino with other platforms like NT, AIX, and others.
Linux growth Over the past few years, Linux has become the fastest growing server environment in history. This enormous growth has been spurred by many factors within the marketplace. Low cost and the desire for an alternative operating system are some of the reasons why Linux has enjoyed such great success. A recent survey conducted by Netcraft (at http://www.netcraft.com) polled Web Servers connected to the Internet and reported that Linux holds an amazing 35.73 percent of the market share. With these types of numbers, Linux is continuing to demonstrate its new-found dominance in the market.
