Don't go it alone, use R5 Migration Pro (continued)

One of the things I liked most about R5 Migration Pro is the fact that it doesn't gather together just hard-core technical information, it also provides you with information to help with other aspects of the migration process as well. One example of this is a Word document that gives you a great summary for your boss about what the expected end-user and administrative improvements are going to be. I found this to be not only very useful but very thoughtful as well. Below is a sample of the content from that document.

Anticipated end-user improvements
Here's a list of the expected end-user functionality improvements:

  • New, easier user interface (Browser-like);
  • Print Preview;
  • Mail rules can be established by end-users for automatic replies, deletions, and other automated tasks;
  • Headlines to automate monitoring of database content;
  • Undelete of accidentally deleted documents;
  • Faster mail file performance, particularly in calendaring and scheduling;
  • Improved calendaring functionality like group calendar print, group invitations, and vastly improved printing;
  • Directly supports "Send To" in Microsoft 2000 applications;
  • Viewer capability is now enhanced for Windows by providing ability to view Office 2000 documents;
  • Global Text Retrieval allows Full-Text searching of non-Notes data stored on the operating system;
  • Supports multiple mail formats;
  • Easier location selection to manage mobile and roving users.

Anticipated administration improvements
Here's a list of anticipated server performance improvements:

  • Server response time has been improved by up to 75% (119ms @ 2000 R5mail users on Sun Solaris (vs. 485ms for R4mail);
  • Memory usage reduced 30% per active connection (200K for each mail user vs. 300K in R4);
  • I/O performance is 10% to 20% better;
  • Improved server performance may allow for server consolidation with reduced operating costs.

I don't know about you, but it would've taken me awhile to compile a list like this, and I undoubtedly would've left something out. Another example of a really useful document in the database is shown in Figure C. Again, it would've taken me a long time to pull all this information together by myself.

The best thing short of hand-holding
One of the many neat things about the database is that it contains step-by-step checklists you can print out and take with you to a server or workstation to use as a guide during the upgrade process. This is as close as you can get to having an expert at your side holding your hand through the entire process. I don't know about you, but there are many times during the day I wish somebody could just give me a checklist I could follow to finish my tasks so I can go home, have a beer, and watch me some football.

Make the most of your TeamStudio investment
Lest you think that there's no correlation between R5 Migration Pro and TeamStudio's core products, think again. The R5 Migration Pro database shows you how to use some of TeamStudio's products, such as Analyzer, to test applications for R5 compatibility. There are a lot of step-by-step procedures in the database that will help you look for potential problems in applications that you're upgrading. But you don't have to own any TeamStudio products in order to benefit from R5 Migration Pro.
