Setting toolkit directories for VC++6
There are some extra steps you need to take so that VC++6 projects can find the API Toolkit components. The good news is that this is a one-time-only setup and won't be necessary for any subsequent projects you create. Go to the menu again and select Tools->Options and then the "Directories" tab. Here's what you need to add here:

• "Show directories for" Include files. Add C:\notesapi\INCLUDE by double-clicking the blank line below the last entry;

• "Show directories for" Library files. Add C:\notesapi\LIB\MSWIN32 in the same way.

And finally, project settings
We're in the home stretch now. Select Project->Settings from the menu. There are some very specific changes that must be made here to make the sample program compile correctly. By default, VC++6 gives you two basic groups of settings, one for a "debuggable" program and a release one for programs you'll use when debugging is complete. Here's what to do.

First we need to make changes to both groups of settings, so change the "Settings for" box to All Configurations.

For the C/C++ tab with category set to "General," put a comma and then NT in the pre-processor definitions to define your OS. For the C/C++ tab with category set to "Code Generation," change "Struct Member Alignment" to 1 byte.

The following settings are made to the Link tab, with category set to General in Win32 Release Settings only:

• At the start of "Object/Library modules," put in notes.lib notes0.obj notesai0.obj eparated by spaces. Don't use commas here. Separate with spaces;

• In the "Output filename" box, change the name from the default from Release/addin.exe to Release/naddin.exe because under Windows all Domino server tasks start with "n".

The following settings are made to the Link tab, with category set to General in Win32 Debug Settings only:

• At the start of "Object/Library modules," put in notes.lib notes0.obj. Notice that notesai.obj is not used in the debug version.

• The output filename doesn't need to change.

Hold your breath, its compilation time
If you followed all those instructions, you should be ready to compile the sample program. Under the Build->Set Active Configuration menu, choose the Win32 Release configuration. At present, the Win32 Debug configuration won't link properly. More on that later. Now, choose Build->Rebuild All from the menu and VC++6 will compile and link your program with no errors. If you copy the naddin.exe file to the program directory of your Domino server, it should work just as Lotus describes in the readme.txt file in the addin sample program folder. For this particular sample program, you'll need to copy the addintst.nsf database from the toolkit's Notedata folder to the server's data directory.
