KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT
Smart content and smart portals make a smart company
By Bain McKay

My last article in the October 2000 issue of DominoPower (at http://www.dominopower.com/issues/issue200010/circuit001.html) discussed the concept of using DOM (Document Object Model), XML (eXtensible Markup Language), and Java Beans with Bean Mark-Up Language to "wire" user applications together, creating context-driven knowledge management applications. These applications can adapt to usage patterns through associative indexing. And they're excellent e-Business, e-Health, e-Education, e-Financial, and e-Legal solutions as we redefine the world in which we work in real-time through the Internet.

Smart content
In this article, I'll take this thinking and its implications to the next level of productivity by discussing smart content in light of workspace portal applications. Smart content helps you manage the problem of infoglut by automatically reducing information content to the problem at hand and organizing it around what you know and how you learn.

Smart portals
Smart content works for you by being your "Eyes under the covers," focusing information on the problem context and eliminating the time-consuming need to manually cull and organize information in order to assimilate it. Smart content can add intelligence to workspace portals in order to create smart portals.

Smart searchng
On a corporate, group, or individual user basis, smart content can trawl the intranet, extranet, and Internet, seeking out pertinent information on a timely basis and routing it to appropriate users based on content similarity to user need.

Smart routing
Document routing can be automatically tuned on a user basis to focus and organize content around each user's profile according to the problem context. This can improve user and corporate learning productivity resulting in faster, more decisive decision making while providing a powerful, organized decision support information.

Smart profiling
Smart portals don't require you as the user or IT to pre-load and maintain knowledge and interest into profiling applications. This is done for you automatically as you work. Smart content learns about your needs dynamically from the documents you write and read. Smart content learns how you work from your collaborative patterns, automatically profiling documents you read and noting who wrote the documents in order to capture the pattern of knowledge transferred.

Smart learning
Smart content leverages usage behavior patterns to capture how you think and learn, building user, workgroup, and enterprise cognitive maps. These cognitive maps can become powerful learning productivity tools for reducing "time to knowledge," thereby maximizing user and group learning productivity.
