DOMINOPOWER SITE OF THE MONTH
Domino gives birth to healthcare Web site
By Steve Niles
Gundersen Lutheran is a complete healthcare network including one of the nation's largest group medical practices, regional community clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, home care, behavioral health services, vision centers, pharmacies, and air and ground ambulances.
They recently completed work rebuilding their official Web site using Lotus Domino, and I've selected the site as July's DominoPower Site of the Month. You can find it at http://www.gundluth.org. It's pictured in Figure A.

Lance Jurgensen, a Systems Analyst Programmer at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center told me more about how the site was put together. This is what he had to say in his own words:
Our entire site is based on Domino and runs on a pair of clustered servers. There are a few things that make our site special, at least in our minds. Number one, it's entirely Domino based. We used classic Notes and Domino programming techniques, sprinkling in some JavaScript and HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) where needed. We stayed away from using third party tools in the build to keep the complexity down. We also built it entirely in-house, keeping the cost down by not using consultants, etc.
Second, its really a "document publishing system" at heart. Content is what drives Web sites, and we've built the site so that our end-user managers can publish their content without worrying too much about formatting or HTML, etc. The entire Web site is driven off of four templates, with 90% of the site based on a single template. When a new department needs to come online, we make a database from the template, and they're online! All documents are created inside our firewall on our clustered application servers and then replicated out to the Web site.
Jurgensen added that the site is pretty new, and that they're still adding new features to it on a regular basis. Current areas of interest include Gundersen Lutheran's Online Nursery, the Gundersen Lutheran East Building Project, and a searchable database of job opportunities at Gundersen Lutheran.
