Automate your server maintenance with GSX Server Guard (continued)
GSX uses the Domino DLL files in the program directory as also listed in the path statement. I found that making a simple typographical error in the path statement (which I did on purpose for testing) did cause errors when installing. The documentation does show how to manually set the path in case the install program can't do it automatically. Total installation and configuration is estimated by GSX to take a total of 25 minutes. Unless you're well-versed in batch file creation, this could take longer than anticipated.
There's an option that's listed in the documentation to install the Remote Configuration module. This is essentially a Domino database from which the product can be set to retrieve configuration updates. The documentation simply says to install the GSXRebCo.nsf database on the server, sign it, and update the ACL in the first part of the install instructions. I was patient in looking for this installation option, but it was nowhere to be found. I even went so far as to look for a template that might have been placed in the Domino data directory, but that also was not found. So after a Windows file search for the name they provided, I did find the database in the GSX program directory. I then simply copied it over and made the necessary adjustments as instructed. I later found directions on installing from the CD only, not the downloadable software.
Configuration The Remote Configuration database should have the ACL set correctly, as it comes with Default as manager, and this gives anyone the ability to change settings and reboots if you're utilizing it for configuration changes. The collapsible sections match the tabs on the server console utility.
Once installed, their console appears as shown in Figure B.

I found all the tabs and options were point-and-click where necessary. When reviewing the options, I did see that GSX itself doesn't install as a service by itself. You're required to manually click the button to then install it as a service.
Features The program comes with the ability to send notices to distribution lists of people, groups, main-in databases, and even Internet addresses. However, it relies on the Domino server to move these mail messages, so in case of failure you have to wait until the server is restarted to get any notices. It would be nice to have an optional SMTP server that could be started in case of "failure to send" notices.
One other feature that was available is the ability to send Broadcast messages to Domino users who are connected to the server before restarts. It will even provide the on-screen pop-up for those clients running R5 of Lotus Notes. This was a nice bonus, and it was available for scheduled reboots and maintenance.
Numerous batch files can be created for weekly, daily and special maintenance. There was a crude entry screen to configure some batches, shown in Figure C, but a tool or wizard for those unfamiliar with all the available Domino and operating system commands would have been appreciated.
