To upgrade or not to upgrade? XP is the question. (continued)

Second, I do seem to experience a few more Notes crashes. To help recover from these crashes, I originally downloaded Cassetica's NotesMedic (at http://www.cassetica.com), which I've used for over a year on Windows 98, but I couldn't get it to install correctly on Windows XP. This problem might be specific to my system, though, since I've heard of others being able to install it just fine. I ended up installing ZapNotes, a free utility you can download from the Iris Sandbox on Notes.net at http://notes.net/sandbox.nsf/$DefaultView/8aa14311cb0c51c388256aa400804e4e.

Another issue I've found since writing the original tip is that on starting Notes, my location will sometimes inexplicably change from a custom one I've created to the "Office" location. This is something I never experienced under Windows 98. Overall, however, I've been able to do everything I need to do in Notes with minimal trouble.

Lotus Domino Designer and Administrator (no experienced problems)
I've used Domino Designer and Domino Administrator and haven't experienced any specific problems with either product.

Lotus Sametime (loads faster, one minor issue)
The Lotus Sametime Connect client actually seems to load faster for me on Windows XP than it does in Windows 98. As far as Sametime applets embedded in Web pages, however, my version of Windows XP didn't come with the Microsoft (Java) Virtual Machine for Internet Explorer installed, so the applets didn't work. I had to download the Microsoft VM from http://microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm40.htm.

One minor issue I've found with Sametime Connect since writing the original tip is that when I go to People at AOL Instant Messenger Services and try to select any of the choices which are supposed to open Web pages, they don't work. Maybe this is Microsoft's way of telling me I really should be using the Windows Messenger software that's built into Windows XP. Windows Messenger is a very interesting piece of software all by itself, and I'll be writing more about it and how it compares to Sametime Connect in a future tip or article.

Lotus QuickPlace (import compatibility issue)
I haven't had any trouble using QuickPlace 2.0.8 with the Internet Explorer 6 browser that comes with Windows XP. What I have had trouble with, though, is the fact that Office XP and QuickPlace 2.0.8 are not yet compatible in terms of importing Office documents into a QuickPlace page (i.e., actually converting them to HTML, rather than just uploading them as attachments). Therefore, in order to import or edit a Microsoft Word or other document that's displayed as an HTML page, I have to switch to my Windows 98 partition where I have Office 2000 installed (thank goodness for this safety net!).

Read Stefan Suesser's comments below for more information about QuickPlace and Windows XP.

iNotes (errors using in IE 6)
I can use iNotes with IE (Internet Explorer) 6 on Windows XP, but I do get some unexpected errors. One example is when I try to refresh the Inbox view and I get two error messages that say, "This page has an unspecified potential security flaw. Would you like to continue?" I just click OK on both of the windows and I'm still able to refresh the view. I've heard that IE 6 is not recommended for iNotes at this time.
