Mick's travel tricks: Notes client setup for easy connectivity (continued)

  • International prefix: From home in the UK, it's 00. From Orlando, it's 011.

  • Country code: Actually you don't have to get this correct, but you do need to make sure that for locations in the same country as the server, you enter the same country code, and for all others, you don't. This is because Notes compares the country code in the location to that of the server to detect whether the call is an International or national call. If the country codes differ, it will dial an international call.

  • Long Distance prefix: As we said before, the 0 at the front of a UK or European area code is actually the long-distance code. My home location has the 0. My Orlando location doesn't. This is used for national calls and ignored for international calls.

  • Area code: Like the country code, this actually doesn't matter whether it's correct or not; it just needs to differ from the server's area code for all locations that are in a different area code from the server so that the area code gets included when it's needed.

Now, we can see how the Notes client uses all this to dial my home server. Remember the number was +44 (0) 1865 383112. At home, I just need to dial 01865 383112.

From my Home location:

  • No outside line prefix is required.

  • The country code at home is the same as that for the server. No intenational call is required, so there's no international prefix or country code.

  • Home location gives a Long Distance prefix of 0, so that gets dialed.

  • Area code at home is not the same as for the server, so the server's area code of 1865 is obtained from the connection.

  • The server's local number of 383112 also comes from the connection.

And as Figure D shows, when I do a File/Mobile/Call Server, it will dial 0 1865 383112.

Similarly, from the Orlando location, The outside line prefix 8 comes from the location. The location and server country codes differ, so an International call is required. International access code on the location is 011, and the server country code from the connection is 44 which means that no long distance prefix is used. Then the area code and number from the connection are used and the number dialed is 8, 011 44 1865 383112, as shown in Figure E.

Once the phone numbers are set correctly, there are a few other parts of a location document of special interest to a traveler.

On the Basics, tab, you might want to set the "Prompt for Time/Date/Phone." If you check this, then at each location switch, Notes will display the location dialog box. This gives you a visual check that the location is set up as you expect. This is particularly useful for a location that doesn't specify a totally fixed location.
