Getting into shape with THE VIEW Web Coding Bootcamp (continued)

FIGURE C

Here's a picture of my nice clean room before I messed it up. Roll over picture for a larger image.

Don't ask me why, but I always take pictures of the hotel rooms I stay in. The room was on the 18th floor and had an excellent view. The view was even more impressive from the top of the hotel, though, as you can see in Figure D.

What a great view of the city! Roll over picture for a larger image.

I loved being able to have a great view of the city anytime I wanted. You can see Coit Tower in this shot.

Another thing that was nice about this conference is that the dining room was close and the food was great. You can see a picture of the dining room in Figure E.

The dining room was close to the conference and lunch was served to you. Roll over picture for a larger image.

And check out one of the yummy entrees that we had in Figure F.

This was some of the best conference food I've ever had. Roll over picture for a larger image.

The Conference materials
When you attend the Bootcamp you get a Bootcamp CD with all of the presentations and sample code. You also get some cool extras on the CD including the following:

  • A complete version of TLCC's Beginner Java Programming for Notes and Domino course, which Paul Calhoun developed. This is normally a $499 value.

  • Ten articles in PDF format from THE VIEW, including "The 5 Web Design Techniques Every Domino Developer Should Know" and "No More Twisties."

  • A mySQL server you can install for testing data access.

One thing that I thought was nice, as well, is that the printed conference materials were bound into handouts for each day. So rather than having a bulky binder you had to carry around, you could simply focus on a booklet that had the lessons for that day.

Coping with FBS (Full-Brain Syndrome)
Just like with most conferences, seminars, and classes, my brain was full before the event ended. In my notes, in fact, I wrote that I was exhausted by 11:28 in the morning on Friday. There is a lot of information to absorb, and you can't drink it all in or you'll drown (or have to pee a lot, I haven't really thought this analogy all the way through). My standard advice is to go to this type of event with a few key objectives to learn more about or problems you're facing that you want to get solved. That way you can stay more focused for longer.

You also have to make sure that you spend time reviewing the Bootcamp materials once you return home. This is easier said than done, though, but it will help you make the most of your investment. I found that writing this review made me realize just how many notes I had taken and just how much I had learned.

Attending
You can attend THE VIEW Web Coding Bootcamp yourself, either physically or virtually. There is still time to attend one of the following upcoming Web Coding Bootcamps being held in the following cities:

  • Sydney, Australia - August 28-30
  • Washington, DC - September 30 - October 2
  • Boston, MA - October 9-11

You can find out more information at http://eVIEW.com/eview/webCodeBootcamp.nsf/citySubFrame.
