Integrate Notes with Palm's new Tungsten T (continued)

I made a copy of my Notes name & address book to save my Pylon Pro configurations. I then uninstalled the Palm Desktop for the Clie and uninstalled Pylon. Then I installed the new Palm Desktop and HotSync that came with the Tungsten T and performed a HotSync operation. I then installed Pylon Pro, replaced my Notes name & address book, and performed another HotSync operation. Everything was fine. All my Contacts, my Diary, and my To Do list appeared as expected on the Tungsten T.

I had a minor moment when I pressed the rightmost button on the Tungsten T and didn't see my Personal Journal entries, but about 30 seconds with the Application Launcher showed me that Palm had added a new NotePad application to take handwritten notes and assigned that to the rightmost button by default. The old MemoPad was still there and was properly populated.

My Pylon Pro applications were in place and all worked too. As before, I had to set up the sort columns in the views, but that's easy. The re-sort of the one large database, our corporate phonebook, was much faster than before. The expenses application still synchronized with my Notes database with no problems.

However, there's no Mail application on the Tungsten T out of the box. There was no mention of it anywhere that I could see in the handbook (now a .pdf file only). It's not that I use it very often, but the ability to pen a quick email on the thing is of occasional value. That's notwithstanding the Tungsten's ability to write SMS (Short Message Service) messages and send them by transfer to my Nokia 7110. That worked even though the Tungsten doesn't have Nokia 7110 support installed on the machine as it comes.

So that left me with a couple of things to do: sort out the Nokia 7110 support and work out what to do about Mail.

Nokia 7110 support
Part of the installation of the Palm Desktop is a thing called Phone Link Updater, which you're supposed to use to get more phone support. But from my desk, it couldn't connect to the Internet. Bummer, I thought. Something to do with my proxy server, I guess. But after a quick browse to the Palm support site in the Tungsten section, I found the Updater. It's a single .zip file, and there's also with a Mac version. In it is a whole pile of Palm OS .prc files and some simple instructions on which ones to install on the Palm handheld. Simple. Then I could select my Nokia 7110 on the handheld. The Tungsten's phone support actually includes:

  • Creation of text (SMS) messages, which can be sent via a connected phone;

  • Direct dialing of the phone directly out of the Address Book;

  • Use of the phone for Internet connectivity and mail. A Wap browser is on the software CD provided. I've not played with this.

Connection to the phone can be achieved via cable, Bluetooth, or Infrared. I've only tried the Infrared, because that's all I have, and it means that you have to have phone and Tungsten close together. However, with Bluetooth you can just leave the phone in your pocket. Very cool.
