The world of Domino blogging (continued)

Steve is continuing to enhance DominoBlog, but there is no firm date due to other commitments in his life. But according to Steve, "It is being developed by a few people this time, to help me along." The design of the next version of DominoBlog will also be open, so we can expect a number of people to start creating their own enhancements to the package.

As to the future of "Domino-related" blogs, he feels the interest has peaked. But there are other directions that have yet to be explored. "I reckon blog software will enter the workplace soon -- but will probably have to be re-named or re-invented so to lose the stigma of being 'blog' software -- i.e., social tools. The methods of content creation and then displaying/querying using technology such as RSS has so many possible uses -- which I am actively exploring at the moment."

DomBlog by Jake Howlett
Probably the first Domino-based option for blogging was Jake Howlett's DomBlog software (at http://www.codestore.net/store.nsf/unid/EPSD-5GLMNB). While the other blogging applications have continued to add more functionality and features, Jake has opted for a simpler approach. "It's all right and does the job but there's more feature-rich alternatives available. People who use and like my template tend to say it's because it's simple. Does exactly what it says on the tin."

Because of this simple approach to the software, many bloggers started their Domino blogging experience based on Jake's design. Jake also has an interesting perspective on the use of Domino for blogging. "If I were asked if Domino were a suitable tool for blogging I would say no. Hosting is not cheap and there are some really nice, cheaper, alternatives like TypePad. I would promote the idea of blogs talking about Domino but I would suggest not feeling like having to use Domino."

Also unlike the other templates, DomBlog will remain in its current state for the foreseeable future. "DomBlog works as it is and most users seem happy. Will fix any bugs but have too much on my plate to devote any time to it."

While Jake sees a positive future for blogging in general, he's more pessimistic for Domino blogging specifically. "Depends whether we're talking about blogging *about* Domino or blogging *with* Domino. I said a while back that I couldn't see there ever being more than 200 Domino blogs and I stand by that comment. I think the number that have died recently outweighs those born."

Wrap-up
Regardless of how you define the term, Domino blogging has had an extremely interesting year. Bloggers have come and gone, but a vibrant core remains whose members have shared their professional and personal lives in ways that are not possible without a blog. Start following a few Domino blogs, and you'll quickly discover the possibilities.
