Post-Lotusphere 2004 report: gaining understanding and perspective (continued)

I just don't think that "IBM Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing" starts quite the same conversation, do you? Is not the most valuable asset provided by Sametime actually Presence Awareness, which then leads in to all the other things that Sametime can do? But please, IBM, don't start calling it "IBM Lotus Presence Awareness, Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing".

More pzazz at the opening session wouldn't go amiss, either. Ambuj Goyal -- Lotus General Manager -- spoke about achievements during 2003, and while impressive they might be, it wasn't kick-ass right between the eyes stuff like we've had in the now somewhat distant past.

The demos were, if we're honest, a bit flat, too. The closing ceremony was good -- much more uplifting comments -- like attendance 15% up on last year, the inevitable video clips shot during the week, and then fifty minutes of comedy from Richard Jennings.

Now one of the things that always happens at Lotusphere when entertainers are brought on, like this year, is that the Europeans have no idea who they are. Most of us never heard of the guy (I understand he's not exactly big in the U.S. either). That didn't affect his humour though, he was good.

And yes, we Europeans did recognize Patrick Stewart at the opening session, and the St. Crispins Day speech, too.

One final thought. I don't know how many of the 5273 attendees went to the Universal Studios party, but I would guess most of them. And the place just looked empty. Scary, but at least it meant no waiting for any rides. Just how many people does it take for places like that to look full?
