Solution Focus: A case-study framework for dynamic career growth (continued)
Getting started The above ideas form a framework. In Word, or whichever word processor you use, create a one-page template. Include the following headings: Title, Client, Challenge, Solution, and Conclusion.
When you begin a new project, start the case-study then. Simply give the project a title (it probably already exists), identify the client, and the challenge. As you work on the project, include notes directly into the solution portion of the case-study template. Later, you'll use these to jog your memory about the solution provided and its benefit to the client.
As soon as you complete a project, finish the case-study. Provide a copy to management, and to the client. Ask for their input. You may find they have additional benefits you hadn't thought of.
Finally, do the same for ongoing tasks you perform. Identify the same three areas and write up a simple explanation as to the benefit of this ongoing work. If there is none, you should ask yourself why the work is being done in the first place.
The case-study approach is a great way to focus your projects and your career. It helps you provide better value to the clients you serve. Later, when you're looking back over your year (as we're doing now), you'll be better able to see the value you provided and keep track of significant accomplishments.
