BEGINNER TIPS STEP-BY-STEP
Configuring Notes 7 as a POP3 client, step-by-step
By David Gewirtz

This week, we continue our Notes 7 intro month with an article about how to configure the Notes 7 client as a POP3 email client.

As we expected, a bunch of you got some joy out of last week's article on installing the Notes 7 client. Bill Spint writes, "What's wrong with you? This stuff is super basic. But it does make my life easier sending my super basic users to the article. OK, I guess I don't really hate you this week."

Well, uh, thanks Bill. I think.

Jackson Delphtsuff was a bit easier on us. "Hey, great article. Simplistic, but I'm sending the URL to my smarter users. They can do this on their own. Now, all I need is something I can point to for them to get their POP3 accounts working from home."

Jackson, your wish is our command. This article's all about setting up Notes 7 as a POP3 client, step-by-step.

Setting up a POP client
Once you've done the basic Notes 7 client install, the next step will be to configure the client for POP email access. If you've never configured anything in your new install, launching the client will result in the screen shown in Figure A.

Let's configure the client. Click picture for a larger image.

There's nothing to configure here, but if you click Next, you'll be brought to the User Information dialog, shown in Figure B.

FIGURE B

If you're just using this as a POP3 client, don't specify a Domino server. Click picture for a larger image.

Here's the simple trick for making Notes 7 into a POP3 client. Do NOT check the "I want to connect to a Domino server" checkbox. If you leave this option unchecked, your Notes 7 client will be a standalone application. Click Next to move to the next screen.

Because we're going for simple POP3 functionality, you don't need to set up instant message. Leave "Setup instant messaging" unchecked, as shown in Figure C, and click Next.

OMG! LOL! No IM for us! Click picture for a larger image.

At this point, you'll be presented with the Additional Services screen shown in Figure D.

FIGURE D

Now's the time to check a box. Click picture for a larger image.

This screen is where you'll tell Notes 7 that you want to retrieve POP3 email. Just click "Internet mail servers," and then click Next.

Nothing's more exciting than setting up Internet mail. On the Set Up Internet Mail screen, select POP from the drop-down menu, select Incoming Internet mail from the second drop down menu, and enter your email server for incoming email (from your ISP to your machine), as shown in Figure E.

FIGURE E

Enter YOUR email server, not mine. Click picture for a larger image.

Don't forget: you'll want to enter your email server here. Mine won't do you any good at all.

Click Next to move on, and you'll see the screen shown in Figure F.

FIGURE F

Enter your account and password information. Click picture for a larger image.

At this point, it's time to enter your incoming email account and password information. This is the actual email account you use. So, for example, if your email account is joemakemefunky@bigolserverinthesky.com, your email account is actually "joemakemefunky".
