Configuring Notes 7 as a POP3 client, step-by-step (continued)

I have a variety of email accounts because we cover so many mail clients across the ZATZ magazines. I've got one specifically for getting mail into the Notes client. Here, I'll enter "dgnotes," but you'll type in your account here. Also enter your password and confirm with re-entering the same password.

Clicking next brings you to the outgoing email server selection screen, shown in Figure G.

You'll get these server names from your ISP. Roll over picture for a larger image.

It's on this screen that some users get confused. That's because you can't always use your outgoing mail server to send mail out. Weird? It's best explained with an example. My mail server is mail.zatz.com. I get mail in from that server and, in theory, send mail out from that server. But when I'm at home, my cable broadband ISP explicitly blocks me from using any SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol) mail server for outgoing email except their own.

So, when I'm at home, I can't use mail.zatz.com as my outgoing mail server. I have to use smtp-server.cfl.rr.com. You may need to find out what your ISP's outbound email server is, and when you do, it'll go on this screen.

Now, enter the name of your outgoing SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol) server, and click Next.

Now, it's time to put it all together, and specify your Internet email address and domain. Using our fun example above, you'll enter "joemakemefunky@bigolserverinthesky.com"; in the E-mail Address field, and "bigolserverinthesky.com" in the Internet Domain field. Once again, please don't use my email address, shown in Figure H.

Enter your email address and domain here. Yours, not mine! Roll over picture for a larger image.

If everything is done correctly, when you click Next, you'll be rewarded with the screen shown in Figure I.

You did it! You really did it!

Running your email client
After all this, I like to restart the client. But you don't have to. In any case, you're likely to see the screen shown in Figure J.

Check the box, and click Yes.

Because I have to jump back and forth between a pile of email clients as part of my editorial responsibility, I haven't checked the box. If you're planning on using Notes as your primary client (and that's why you're reading this article, right?), check the box, and click Yes.

Finally, sit back and enjoy. You'll see your inbox, like that shown in Figure K.

It's email time! Roll over picture for a larger image.

Go ahead and start emailing, Notes 7 style!
