OPEN SOURCE NOTES
Keep track of your backups with BackupTracker
By David Gewirtz

Here at DominoPower, we're big fans of OpenNTF.org and the efforts of its contributors. If you're not familiar with OpenNTF.org, you're in for a big treat. There are many really cool databases, tidbits, and development discussions on the site, all about creating free, open source applications for the Notes and Domino community.

This month, we're going to spotlight one such application, a very simple database called BackupTracker, shown in Figure A, and developed by Ernie Mercer.

As you can see, the database is a very simple tool for keeping track of some very important information: your backups. The database lets you keep track of the various backups you're supposed to be doing and has a calendar page, so you can see your backup schedule at a glance.

BackupTracker allows you to print up transaction receipts, as shown in Figure B, consisting of details for a particular backup run (like, for example, if you're giving the slip to an admin who needs to gather the backups together, and bring them to safe, offsite storage).

The database is a free download and, in testing, works fine with both Notes 6 and Notes 7. There aren't a lot of bells and whistles, but it's useful right out of the ZIP file, and, hey, it's free. Because the database is free and does what it promises, we give it a rating of a four out of five.

This is a very simple database, but because it's free, simple, and works, we can give it a strong rating. If you had to pay $20,000 for this, the rating would be quite different.

One last note: in order to download files from OpenNTF.org, you'll need to register. It's a quick process and then the entire catalog is open to you. We'll bring you more OpenNTF projects in the future.

OUR RATING: 4 of 5
