THE DOMINOPOWER INTERVIEW
A customer's perspective on Portal 6
By David Gewirtz

We continue our popular series of interviews. This week, rather than interviewing a Business Partner, I had the opportunity to talk with an actual customer using Lotus technologies.

Bill Jenkins is the Senior Director of Information Technology for UNICCO Service Company. UNICCO's a 19,000 employee, privately held services firm that uses Lotus technologies heavily within it's IT organization. We had a chance to talk to Bill about his impressions of Portal 6 and how UNICCO's using Portal and Lotus tech throughout the organization.

David: We don't often get the opportunity to talk with the real users of Lotus technology out there. This is quite a treat. Let's get started by learning about UNICCO.

Bill: UNICCO Service Company is one of North America's largest integrated facilities services companies, with 19,000 employees and $700 million in annualized revenues. The privately-held company has over 55 years of facilities outsourcing experience, and maintains an industry-leading 95% customer retention rate.

"Be careful not to fall for the eye candy."

UNICCO offers operations and maintenance, janitorial services, landscaping, lighting and office services for industrial, multi-tenant and corporate offices, education, retail, financial institutions, government and public venue facilities.

UNICCO is committed to environmentally-preferable practices through close collaboration with leading edge partners and the use of green products and best practices procedures, as well as through customer awareness programs. UNICCO's advanced facilities technologies include the myUNICCO portal, UNI-Q palmtop inspection system, eProcurement and a 24x7 national call center.

David: $700 million, 95% retention rate, and privately held. Those are impressive states. Let's move on to you, now. Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do for UNICCO.

Bill: Sure, my name is Bill Jenkins and I am the Senior Director of Information Technology for UNICCO Service Company. I report directly to the CIO, and am responsible for IT operations and systems for the entire organization. I began my career as a systems engineer, and have been working in information technology for over 27 years.

David: What kinds of Lotus applications do you use at UNICCO?

Bill: We are using quite a few of the IBM products at UNICCO, including WebSphere Portal to provide our myUNICCO portal solution. We have also protected many of our other technology investments by integrating them into the portal solution.
