Understanding document management system implementation: a consultant's view (continued)

Do you have senior management backing for the project?
Finally and perhaps most importantly, the success of any DMS initiative relies upon backing from senior management. Often a DMS initiative will take a back seat over other projects that are perceived to be of greater value to the business by senior personnel.

However, many of the key challenges above can only be addressed when there is clear direction from the top and without it, the DMS initiative will often fail or only be succeed in isolated areas of the business.

Summary
In summary, you should know what a DMS can do for you, and set realistic expectations. You also need to be aware of the challenges that will be faced and be prepared to take steps to overcome them as part of the overall implementation plan.

However, if you do the groundwork, set the correct expectations, and get the buy in from our users and managers, over time, people will begin to understand the important role the DMS system plays in the organization. And once they have had it for a couple of years; I dare you to try and take it away from them.
