THE DOMINOPOWER INTERVIEW
An interview with Phil Sheehy on mobilizing Notes applications
By David Gewirtz
We continue our series of interviews with Lotus Business Partners. This week, I had the opportunity to interview Phil Sheehy, Vice President of Wireless Solutions at iEnterprises. In this in-depth interview, Phil will help us understand what's involved in mobilizing Notes applications.
David: Please introduce yourself, help us understand what you do for iEnterprises, and share with us some of your background.
Phil: I'm Phil Sheehy, Vice President of Wireless Solutions. I am involved in all aspects of bringing iEnterprises's product, CRM on the Go, to market. I have been involved in wireless/mobile computing for nearly ten years and have worked for Ericsson, Aether Systems and CommonTime.
David: I noticed your email tag line is "The Mobile CRM Experts". I know iEnterprises is a CRM company, but I didn't realize your focus was mobile. Is iEnterprises moving to a mobile solution focus?
Phil: We are very much "the CRM experts" and consider our specific competency in mobile CRM to fall under that umbrella. We see these two areas as being complimentary and intertwined as many of our CRM customers need wireless and vice versa.
David: So do you support devices like Pocket PCs, Treos, Blackberry's etc?
Phil: The product that ships today supports BlackBerry devices as we have found the majority of enterprises choose the BlackBerry as their first choice. We are currently developing support for Windows Mobile 5.0. Other device platforms are not on our near-term road map but will be address based on customer feedback.
David: Are you putting code onto the BlackBerry itself, or using a Web-like interface?
Phil: CRM on the Go is a client/server product; therefore, we place an application on the BlackBerry device. This client is a Java application that we developed using the MDS tools provided by RIM.
This approach allows us to provide a form of local replication on the device. Having the data locally on the device allows the application to function very quickly. All screens take only a second or two to come up. This is much different than Web-based solutions that can take a minute or two to load a single page.
David: How are you handling the Web server services side of things?
Phil: We have developed connectors that allow us to access data via Web Services. Our Notes connector can expose any Notes database to Web Services and ultimately allows that data to be manipulated on wireless devices.
David: Are you using SOAP or XML-RPC?
