Exploring Domino Web Access Lite: the new low-bandwidth option in Lotus Domino 8.01 (continued)

These settings will apply to the Lite client, if the feature is in the subset offered by the Lite client. For more information on what features settings are supported in DWA Lite, review the 8.01 release notes.

ActiveX is used in the Full DWA mode (only for Internet Explorer browsers), but not for the Lite mode. It is not required for either mode. However, it is needed to support MailTo and cache scrubbing in DWA Full mode. If an end-user is going to be switching between the full and Lite mode, it is recommended that he or she download and install the ActiveX control (DWA8.CAB) if this is enabled for site.

Access of Lite mode is controlled by the administrator. You can either set up your users to automatically have default access, or have your users select the choice upon login. Your users can also select DWA Lite once they have logged into DWA. This functionality is built into the existing 8.01 mail template. Notes INI parameters on the server can be used to control the settings of the DWA Lite mode. You can use the iNotes_WA_EnableLiteMode setting to remove the Full and Lite buttons from the Full mode client as follows:

  • Set to 1: This is the default value. When set to 1, the Full and Lite buttons are displayed in Full and Lite modes. This setting allows the users to switch modes.

  • Set to 0: Setting the value to 0 will hide the Full and Lite buttons in the Full mode. The buttons will still be visible in the Lite mode. This will prevent Full users from switching to Lite mode, but Lite users will always be able to switch to full mode.

The NOTES.INI value iNotes_WA_DefaultUI=dwa_lite can be used to make DWA Lite the default interface. This parameter will only affect users who are accessing the servers using an explicit URL. If the mail file is accessed via the redirect database, the mode set in the login form will be used. If the parameter is not in place the default interface is full mode.

To set up the redirect for DWA Lite, a new section was added to the DWALoginForm in the DWA Redirect database to allow users to select the mode to be used when logging in to DWA, as shown in Figure C.

To see these options on the redirect page, set the redirect database option "Enable Personal Options?" to "No" and "Enable Login Options?" to "Yes" on the UI Setup tab. If Personal Options are enabled, users will not see the mode options on the login page; however, the mode can be selected using the personal options settings page, as shown in Figure D.

Troubleshooting the Lite mode is now a little easier with the addition of the Domino Web Console. To open the DWA Console in DWA Lite, hold the Control key and click the Domino Web Access logo. This feature is only available in the Lite mode. If you need to debug an issue in the full mode, test it in the Lite mode and use the console. The information collected in the consul can then be used by Lotus support to assist with your issue. You can see a sample of what is displayed in detail mode in Figure E.
