Lotusphere 2009 showcases SAP, BlackBerry, Sametime 8.5, and more (continued)

You'll be able to click an action from a Sametime chat with someone, and in the same way start a voice call with the recipient, because sometime a voice call is just the best thing to do. You can then bring more people into the call, if you need to, just by dragging their name into the call, and, if the conversation is still going when you need to go home, transfer it to your mobile on the fly.

While we'd seen it last year, there was more to show off this year. This stuff is all very, very cool, but you will need to make sure that your network can handle the IP traffic that it's going to generate with all those VoIP calls.

Sametime 8.5 brings a better browser experience, too. There will be a new browser implementation with essentially the same look and feel as the 8.5 Eclipse/RCP Sametime Connect client, and this new browser client will all be pushed down from the server as required with no pre-install of Java applets required. This new browser client will have a complete set of API's, too.

However, all these new features are hosted on WebSphere. All the Unified Comms components run on WebSphere, as does the new meeting manager. Instant Messaging and Presence Awareness can still be handed by a Domino server, and while you'll be able to do that on WebSphere too, the Domino server will retain the IM and PA capabilities for the foreseeable future to ensure that Notes clients get the Sametime support that you get with every Notes client even if you don't have any other Sametime components.

But if you want to use Sametime beyond support for the Notes client, you'll need to start learning WebSphere to install and support it.

Next week: Connections, Quickr, Foundations, Protector.
