Troubleshooting Lotus Notes Traveler: the basics
By Joe Dolittle

We've been getting a number of reader questions about using Lotus Notes Traveler, many of which are very basic and quite easy to solve. In this article, we've aggregated the questions and give you some helpful answers. You'll slap yourself on the forehead and say, "But, of course. I knew that!"

But, of course, you did not. Or you wouldn't have sent us the questions.

Can't email another Notes user
So here goes. Let's start with a question from Irene Sanchia, who writes:

All my email is delivered, except when I send a message to another Notes user. My admin just tells me I'm typing the addresses wrong, but I'm not stupid. I know how to type an email address.

No, Irene, you're not stupid. But you're probably missing something kind of obvious. If you're sending to another Notes user, you're probably using an email address like JoeDolittle/Editorial/ZATZ@US or some other variant of the hierarchical name structure often used in a Notes network. The fix is easy. Instead of typing JoeDolittle/Editorial/ZATZ@US into the address field, put it in brackets, like:

<JoeDolittle/Editorial/ZATZ@US>;

Now, it'll work.

My folders don't show up
Marcos Regulo seems to be missing his folders, but it's just a matter of patience. He writes:

When I create a folder on my Windows Mobile device, they don't show up in Notes. Whus up wit' dat?

Whus up wit' dat, Marcos, is you're brutalizing the English language. I went to a four-year college and studied the masters. When I read writing like that, it makes my heart weep. I should be writing the next great American novel, but, oh, no. Dad said I had to be self-supporting. Dad said I had to get a job. Dad wouldn't make the next payment on my Mazda MX-5, so for the past ten years, I've been editing tech magazines and answering questions that end with "Whus up wit' dat?"

I don't even drive the MX-5 anymore. It broke down. Now I drive a Ford. A Ford. Lord help me.

OK, so where was I? That's right, folders. This one's easy. Marcos, all you need to do is wait until the mail database is closed, then reopened again. This occurs on the server, so it might take a little while, but they'll show up. It's not the best way for things to work, but we're hoping Lotus will make it better, soon.

Duplicate messages
Bubba-Bob Kimo Kai Konani writes:

I'm seeing double. There's two email messages on my phone, but only one on the server.

Oh, come on, that can't possibly be your real name! Fine, Bubba-Bob. Let's see if I can figure out what's happening. I'm assuming you're not saying you just got two messages, but instead you're getting duplicate messages on the handheld, but seeing only one on the server.
