Log analysis programs compared

Over the last couple of months we have looked at the Web activity on your Domino Web server. This month we'll focus on three specific products designed to ease the administration burden of monitoring and tracking a Domino-based Internet or intranet website.
The three products reviewed in this article are Dominator, WebTrends Suite for Lotus Domino, and Domino Log Analyzer.
The goal of each product is to ease the maintenance and monitoring chores for a Domino Web site, but each takes a difference approach to providing a solution. Both the Dominator and Domino Log Analyzer products live and breath within the familiar Notes and Domino database environment. On the other hand, the WebTrends Suite for Lotus Domino is a stand-alone application.
Let's dive into each application, one-by-one.
Dominator
I was able to obtain a pre-release copy of version 2.0 of the product for this review, so it was used instead of the publicly available version 1.0 that's available from their Web site. The first interesting item about this product is that it is shareware. Shareware is a marketing avenue for software that facilitates try before you buy, but it is not free. Version 1.0 of the product is available for download after registering from their site. You are allowed to use it, legally, for 30 days and then purchase it if you continue to use it.

The product is very simple and straightforward to set up and use. It consists of a single Notes database.Installation involves copying that database to your Notes environment. One positive aspect of this product is that it can be used from a server, workstation, or Web browser. In addition, version 2.0 allows the scheduling of reports (generated automatically based on a defined schedule) and the reports can be emailed to one or more persons.
Figure A shows the top half of the configuration form with all of the available options. Reports can be restricted by start and end dates, database, or server IP address. The server IP address is aimed at those organizations running virtual servers.

There are twelve pre-defined reports that retrieve data from the Domino Web server log database (located further down on the Server Configuration form, and shown in Figure B). Currently, the product only works with the native Domino database formatted Web log.
