PRODUCT REVIEW
TeamStudio Librarian
By Richard Echeandia

Notes doesn't always encourage a developer to do things in precisely the right way. One of the most under-utilized areas of Lotus Notes design practice is the re-use of existing code objects. If you're one of the DominoPower faithful, you probably realize that code re-use is one of the things that I get up on a soapbox about pretty regularly. See "Reducing your Notes application development time by 15% article" found in the November 1998 issue at http://www.dominopower.com/issues/issue199811/reduce001.html, and my own feature article elsewhere in this issue.

One way to maximize software re-use might be to use an "include" function, like that found in C or C++. Only LotusScript events support an "include" declaration like "true" programming languages. Subforms and Script Libraries are a big help, but they still work on a database-by-database basis. In order to get the benefits of reusable code, Notes developers must use design templates to share common elements of application designs across databases.

The problem, though, is that the average design environment gets difficult to track pretty quickly. With a single database potentially inheriting elements from many source templates, keeping track of the related design elements can be confusing for the developer. Finally, because the process is still probably done on an ad-hoc basis, dependencies between elements can be forgotten or unequally applied.

Librarian overview
It's into this environment that Librarian from Ives Development, Inc. has been delivered. Librarian lets you drag and drop design elements between Notes databases and Notes templates. In this review, I'll discuss my experiences with the product and give you some thoughts about how it could be used in your environment.

Simple installation
Like all of the TeamStudio products, the Librarian utility is delivered in a compressed Lotus Notes database. Copy the executable to your local drive and execute it. You'll then have an INSTALL.NSF file. Add this database to your Notes Workspace and open 'er up. You'll be prompted through the rest of the process. Pick the product or products that you'd like to install, accept the licensing agreement and click on the Install button. Because the product is accessed via a SmartIcon in Lotus Notes, you'll need to restart Notes and off you go.
