PROGRAMMING POWER
Get twisted and change your twisties
By Shabbir Tayeb Ali
There are relatively few options available for customizing views displayed in a browser. However, if you get crafty, you can do some interesting stuff. One thing that's always bothered me in Notes Views is what all us Notes-folk call "twisties" (you know, the little arrows you click to drop down more options or expand on a topic). These twistie shapes are fixed whenever views are previewed in the Web browser. In this article, I'll show you how you can change the twistie displayed on your views.
Two tracks to twisting twistie Normally, a Twistie is represented by the little, blue triangle images we've all come to know and love, as shown in Figure A. Two triangle orientations dictate the expanded and collapsed categories, as well as provide links to expand and collapse the category displayed. However nicely these two images work, there is always a desire for a better replacement.
FIGURE A
Here's a snapshot of a view in the browser, with categorized columns and the pretty, little default twisties. Click picture for a larger image.
In this article, I'll look at two different ways you can change your twistie without getting your knickers in a twist.
Twist them all Here's the core of the secret: Domino displays two images EXPAND.GIF (arrow pointing down) and COLLAPSE.GIF (arrow pointing to the right) located in the DOMINO/ICONS folder in the Notes DATA directory. If you want it in URL form, they're /icons/expand.gif and /icons/collapse.gif.
So, if you're willing to change the twistie shape for all the views in all the databases on your server, just replace these files. This is an easy job.
And, Hurrah! You got it. Just replace these two images with whatever images you want and they are all changed in one go.
Other icons you can hack For extra credit, look into the ICONS directory and you'll find lots of other images you can change. Just don't get too twisted.
Table A lists some of the other interesting images to give an idea of what you can change.
| Image Name |
Description |
| actn***.gif |
*** represents three digit numbers like 012 and "act" stands for "action" so these images are displayed in Web browsers in place of the normal Notes action buttons and are linked to perform actions. There are a total of 155 images from actn001.gif to actn155. |
| vwicn***.gif |
These are the 172 different icons that are displayed in view columns that have the property checked "Display values as icons" in the column properties box. Like the action icons, they're numbered from vwicn001.gif to vwicn172.gif. You evaluate the column value to a number you require for the row's icon. You can easily add vwicn173.gif or so and evaluate the value to show that picture in the browser. |
| prevview.gif, nextview.gif, expview.gif, colview.gif, schview.gif |
Previous, Next, Expand All Categories, Collapse All Categories and Search View images (these are the defaults if no view template is used). If you look back, you can see these images in Figure A at the top of the view. |
| expand.gif, collapse.gif |
These are the two images of our changing twistie shape. |
