DOMINOPOWER SITE OF THE MONTH
Tactica Technology Group
By Heather McDaniel
The Tactica Technology Group's Web site consists of two Lotus Notes databases. One database is used for presentation items such as serious HTML, JavaScript, and object store. The other is used for site content. Our Senior Technical Editor, Richard Echeandia, works at Tactica. Any questions about the site's design can be directed to him at recheand@tacticatech.com. Writer David Mann is also from Tactica. Even though there's some editorial connection to this site, it's still worthy of Site of the Month. Read on.
The folks at Tactica wanted to create a shell on the presentation side of their Web site into which they could bring content. According to Tactica's David Mann, "This would allow content editors to work as far away from embedded coding as possible."
Technically, when a visitor visits the Tactica home page, a doclink is launched from the About document, and that in turn renders the home page. Pretty slick!
Figure A shows the homepage's scrolling Java applet, which displays press release documents using a computed for display field that performs @dbcolumn formulas. The return values from this field feed the proper parameters for the applet.

The content database contains two different forms. One form appears when you open a document on the Lotus Notes client side, and the other renders on the Web. Dave explains, "They share the same alias and the form name on the Lotus Notes client is Notes Rich Text. The form name for the Web is Web Rich Text."
The $$ViewTemplate default on both the Presentation and Content databases doesn't actually show views -- it contains a link that returns the browser to the homepage. It acts as a security mechanism that hides unformatted content from prying eyes.
