DOMINOPOWER SITE OF THE MONTH
Golf site designers on par with Domino
By Steve Niles

Golf Digest (the premier publication in the golf industry) dubbed it a "recommended golf Web site," and Lotus named it one of the top 50 Domino/Notes Web sites. With credentials like these, who are we to argue? What is this esteemed Internet location? It's called Duffer.Com, and it's July's DominoPower Site of the Month. You can find it at http://www.duffer.com.

Duffer Enterprises was founded in 1998 with the goal of creating the best golf site on the Internet. They operate with a full-time staff of three, as well as several part-timers, yet they have no central office facility. Instead, according to their Web site documentation, they "work across physical boundaries, linked together virtually on the Net itself."

Some of the features you'll find on Duffer.Com include a complete online golf publication, an e-commerce system selling over 500 products, and a search engine called the Duffer Directory that rates over 1,500 golf sites. The site's homepage is pictured in Figure A.

Duffer.Com is entirely implemented in Lotus Domino and Notes R5. It's hosted on a T3 by a Lotus-centric ISP and consulting company called Internoded. They've made use of Domino Designer in the creation of their online golf publication and will be looking to XML, XSL, and related technologies in the coming year to support advanced data transfer and display.

"I would say that we have a pretty sophisticated concept of the way to blend heavy usage of Domino/Notes for design as well as programming," Duffer.Com's self-proclaimed Head Duffer has shared with us. "I have an idea that this is one of the largest pure-Internet Domino sites in the world with respect to scope and content, but I may be nuts."

Of particular interest is the fact that Lotus has included Duffer.Com in the company's beta program for its next-generation knowledge management system, codenamed Raven. The folks at Duffer.Com plan to make use of Raven in a series of pilot projects.

Be sure to check out Duffer.Com for a great example of what can be done with Notes and Domino.
