Assess your current Lotus position with a quick quiz
By Dan Simmons
Spring is the perfect time to reflect on your career, revel in your accomplishments, and set goals for the months ahead. The question is, can you reach your professional goals at your current place of employment? This quiz should assist you in deciding whether to stick it out with your current boss or to hit the street with your resume in hand.
For each of the following situations, write down the number of points that correspond with the way you feel about your job.
Bored? In today's business climate there's no reason to stay in a boring job. You should continually be improving the productivity of your users by either developing new programs or improving network operations. If you're simply maintaining systems, adding users, or writing small enhancements to an R4 application, it's time to polish your resume. Recently, I met an entertainer whose business card read, "If it ain't fun, we don't do it." While you may not be able to enjoy this luxury at your current position, you should be able to have fun and enhance your skills continually.

Behind the times? If you're a Notes administrator and you think clustering is a star formation, you're behind the curve. As a Notes developer with solid experience, you should be writing Domino applications (hopefully full lifecycle), or you're simply not up to date. Some of the more exciting projects I've heard about include using XML to integrate applications with PDAs and integrating heavy duty JavaScript throughout a Web based application.

Working too much? Are you spending your evenings hugging your computer or your loved ones? Only you can judge your life/work balance, but a few things to consider include overnight travel, commute time, and overtime. Before changing jobs for these reasons, talk with your employer and see if he or she can accommodate you. Possible solutions include bringing your spouse along to the out-of-town work site instead of flying home, or undertaking a partial telecommute.
