DOMINOPOWER SITE OF THE MONTH
Hints and tips and a whole lot more
By Steve Niles

I've spotlighted a number of sites over the years that offer hints and tips from Notes and Domino users. Sometimes those simple sites can blossom into something more, as was the case for Matt Holthe. You may recognize the name, as we ran his article, "Building DHTML views with Internet Explorer," in the August 2000 issue of DominoPower at http://www.dominopower.com/issues/issue200008/dhtml0800001.html.

March's DominoPower Site of the Month is Matt Holthe's Breaking Par site at http://www.breakingpar.com. It's pictured in Figure A.

Breaking Par has been in business for over four years. It was started as a way to share Domino hints and tips and to publish Matt's articles. Since, then, however, a company has formed around Breaking Par, growing into a Domino and HTML hosting provider and a Domino product development company. The hints and tips are still there, but they have been expanded to include API tips, JavaScript tips, and other categories.

According to Matt, the company hosts Domino Web sites and HTML Web sites created and maintained either by Breaking Par or by the customer. They also provide Domino development service for different clients and are working on several different products to assist Domino administrators, developers, and end users.

I asked Matt to fill me in on how the site was designed. This is what he had to say:

The current version of the Breaking Par Web site has each page generated through a combination of JavaScript and Cascading Style Sheets. The code is all stored in documents in a Domino database, which means the code can be maintained and upgraded without using the Domino Designer. Dynamic HTML is used on the home page and in subtle ways throughout the Web site.

It's interesting to see how a hints and tips Web site like so many others I've visited can grow into a full-on company. Check it out for yourself at http://www.breakingpar.com.

If so, your site may be eligible for consideration as the DominoPower Site of the Month. If chosen, you'll even be entitled to display the fantabulous banner shown in Figure B.
