Synchronize your handheld with Lotus Notes

Being both a Domino geek and a gadget geek, I'm often asked for a recommendation about what software to use to synchronize Lotus Notes information with Palm OS or Pocket PC devices. My answer to this question has varied over the years, and I've literally tried almost all of the synchronization software options out there. I started off using one of the first versions of Lotus EasySync, eventually moved to Pylon Pro, and recently tried using Intellisync (which I wrote about in the January 2002 issue of DominoPower at http://www.dominopower.com/issues/issue200201/wireless0102001.html).
In this article, I'd like to offer you my thoughts on these three synchronization solutions in order to help you find one that will work best for you. I know that there's sometimes confusion about these three products and what their different strengths and weaknesses are, and I'd like to clear that up as much as possible. This article started off as two DominoPower tips earlier this year, and I've taken those tips and expanded on them, adding some additional thoughts and information I've learned since then, as well as a couple of comments from readers.
I'm a big believer that having a solid synchronization solution can really help your personal productivity, which is one of the reasons why I've used all these products. The types of solutions on which this article focuses are ones that normal end-users can use to synchronize their Notes information with their handheld devices on their own. There's also a whole other class of synchronization solutions out there that are designed to help enterprises enable their users to synchronize directly with a Notes server, either via a cradle, a modem, or wirelessly. I'll talk more about these solutions next month, including the XTNDConnect Server software I'm currently using to synchronize my new HP Jornada 568 directly with our Domino server. Recently, my older brother, Tim, asked me to recommend a solution to synchronize his Lotus Notes information with his Palm OS handheld. Here's the scenario: His company uses Lotus Notes almost exclusively for email, so he wanted to synchronize only his Notes mail to his Handspring Visor and wanted to continue to synchronize the rest of his PIM information, such as contacts and To Do items, with his Palm Desktop software.
