DOMINOPOWER PRODUCT OF THE MONTH
Integrate Lotus software with the .NET environment
By Steve Niles
J2EE, in the form of IBM's WebSphere product family, and Microsoft's .NET environment are becoming the major application development and deployment platforms. Many enterprises that make use of these platforms also use Lotus' messaging and collaboration products: Notes, Domino, and Lotus Sametime. While IBM is working to integrate these products with the Java world, a company called Proposion is working on integration solutions for the .NET environments as well.
This month, Proposion (at http://www.proposion.com) is releasing a new product called Proposion N2N, and I've selected it as November's DominoPower Product of the Month. Proposion N2N is designed to enable enterprises that have adopted Microsoft's .NET platform to integrate with their existing Lotus Notes and Domino applications. It's a complete native implementation of an ADO.NET managed data provider for accessing Notes and Domino data.
What this means is that Proposion N2N should allow any .NET application (which could be a graphical Windows application, a Web site built with ASP.NET, a mobile application, or a .NET Web service) to connect to any Domino database. You could then use a few lines of code to perform queries of Domino data. This connector should provide full access to Domino views, folders, multi-value fields, rich text, full text searches, attachments, image resources, agents, etc.
Proposion N2N is also designed to allow you to create, update, and delete documents in your Domino database. You should also be able to access many of Domino's messaging and collaboration functions (sending mail, accessing calendars, initiating chats, etc.).
As of the writing of this article, Proposion N2N is in beta, but it's scheduled for release by November 15. Pricing will be announced at that time as well. However, a live demo is available, so you can check it out first to see if it'll work for you. If your company is thinking about integrating your Notes and Domino software with the .NET environment, Proposion N2N seems worth looking into.
