Learn Domino 6 System Administration with a little TLCC

One of the most taxing aspects of being a developer is staying abreast of new technologies and updates to current products. The Lotus Notes and Domino product line is no different. IBM provides plenty of information via its Web site. There are numerous books and classroom training available as well, but one area gaining wider acceptance is online training.
TLCC (The Learning Continuum Company) has risen to the top of the market for online Domino training. They offer broad courses covering administration and development, as well as more focused courses covering LotusScript, JavaScript, and so forth. They've expanded into Java development courses, including WebSphere coverage, and offer demo courses on their site. Recently, I was able to spend time perusing the Domino 6 System Administration 1 course.
Course setup
TLCC training begins with setup on your personal computer. This requires the Domino client software since the training course is contained in a Domino database. In addition, a discussion database is utilized as well. The appropriate software version is required for the course (version 6 for my course).
A self-extracting executable is downloaded from the TLCC site once you've been granted access to the course. The installation process places two databases on your system. Also, your Notes ID should be cross-certified with TLCC to properly replicate the databases with TLCC's Domino servers.
The installation process was straightforward once the file was downloaded. I exchanged emails with a TLCC staffer to cross-certify me, by sending the fully distinguished name of my Notes user ID. I did experience a problem with the product version. My course required Domino 6. I had version 7 (beta) installed, but this didn't satisfy the course software, so I had to dig out the proper installation media.
In addition, I experienced an initial problem accessing Web data via the Notes client. This was easily corrected by editing the location document to specify that Web data should be retrieved from the Notes workstation, as opposed to working offline via Web Navigator (Domino server task).
Self-paced training
You're ready to begin the training once the databases are installed. Figure A shows the initial course database screen with a navigator on the left and the view's contents on the right.

You can navigate the training material via the navigator and associated view. The database does provide sufficient online help, accessed via the View Help button as shown in Figure B.
