THOSE AMAZING USERS
Declined, but not forgotten
By Nancy Hand

Roy is an easy-going type. So when he came by my desk to complain about a calendar issue, I figured it was serious.

A repeating meeting, for every other Friday, had suddenly disappeared from Roy's calendar. Though a couple of meetings had been cancelled there still should have been visible calendar entries.

"When Lotus Support suggested I upgrade the version of Domino to fix the problem, I buried my head in the stack of papers on my desk and counted to ten."

But Roy's calendar made it look like he was available. There were no meetings, appointments, reminders, nor events visible on Fridays. When I tried to schedule a meeting with him, Roy was busy. I typed "tell sched show Roy Smith/Site1" at the console and saw three meetings, at the same time, every other Friday.

Still at the console I typed "tell sched validate". Roy still had three meetings for the time slot. I ran Fixup, Updall, and Compact on his file then re-ran "tell sched show". Roy still had three meetings. There was nothing wrong with his profile in CLUBUSY.NSF. There were just those three meetings hiding somewhere in the system.

Replicas of his file had the same problem. I made multiple copies of Roy's file, from different replicas, on my workstation. The Notes copy process didn't clear the problem either. I called Lotus Support. They had me delete the (CalendarProfile) form from Roy's mailfile and replace the design. Roy still had three meetings.

When Lotus Support suggested I upgrade the version of Domino to fix the problem, I buried my head in the stack of papers on my desk and counted to ten. Then I asked Roy for more information.

It appeared Roy had accidently declined the entire year's worth of meetings just before it vanished from his calendar. When he realized his mistake, Roy had the chair re-invite him. The second invitation disappeared as soon as he accepted it. So Roy created an appointment to remind him of the meeting, but that vanished from view the next day.

I had the file restored from tape for the day before Roy declined the meeting. Everything looked fine. I poked and prodded at the multiple copies of Roy's file for a few days before deciding what to do.

Holding down the Ctrl and Shift keys I opened Roy's file to display hidden views. I went to the ($ApptUNID) view and found the original meeting notice, with the user-friendly display name of 71C9E6793782AA5E882570B5005EFCEC. I highlighted it, took a deep breath, and hit the delete key. I deleted every entry in the view with that identifier, including cancellations and re-schedules. I identified and deleted the appointment and second meeting invitation. Then I went to the restored copy of Roy's file and located the original meeting. I copied the original document, including all the changes, and pasted them into the active mailfile.
