THE DOMINOPOWER INTERVIEW
An interview with Philippe Cohen on Notes/Sharepoint coexistence
By David Gewirtz

We continue our series of interviews with Lotus Business Partners. This week, I had the opportunity to interview Philippe Cohen, Vice President of Software and Solutions at Mainsoft. In this in-depth interview, Phil will help us understand the juggernaut that's SharePoint and what it means for Lotus IT professionals. Mainsoft has also built on of the first commercial plug-ins for Notes 8 and 8.5, and we get some very interesting insights into their experience using the Eclipse framework.

David: Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do for Mainsoft?

Philippe: My name is Philippe Cohen, and I'm the Vice President of Software and Solutions for Mainsoft. I'm heading up a team that's developing software and solutions that integrate Microsoft technologies, specifically SharePoint and .NET, into IBM middleware like Lotus Notes, Lotus Sametime, Lotus Expeditor, WebSphere Portal, and WebSphere Application Server.

David: What exactly is SharePoint and how does it relate to Lotus products?

Philippe: SharePoint is the centerpiece of Microsoft's collaboration and information management strategy. It's capable of supporting team collaboration, document management, records management, enterprise portals, and business workflows. So for IT organizations, it's a pretty big deal.

SharePoint is also making a big impact on IT end users. SharePoint is the natural back-end for Microsoft Office, the desktop productivity suite that's used by more than 80 percent of information workers. For Office 2007 users, SharePoint delivers a tight integration with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, among others.

David: How does SharePoint relate to Lotus Quickr? Are they directly competitive?

Philippe: Many industry experts consider Quickr and SharePoint to be direct competitors. Both are self-service, Web 2.0 collaboration platforms that provide repositories for teams to organize, access and share documents and contacts as well as manage projects using team calendars and discussion forums. Once you upgrade to Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, and you upgrade your Quickr license to the Standard Edition, you can use either one to integrate team content into enterprise portals, business workflows, business intelligence software, and enterprise content management solutions.
